This week, Microsoft shared that its cloud computing platform Azure fended off a 2.4 Tbps DDoS attack that took place in the last week of August 2021. The attack came from approximately 70,000 sources in different countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and also from the United States. It’s one of the largest DDoS attacks ever recorded.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are a big deal. They can overflow your servers and stop important traffic from passing through, whether it be content hosting, payment processing, or any other service. These types of cyber-attacks are usually intended to prevent a service from being available to its users. In today’s connected world, services such as shopping sites, social networking, email, and other online collaboration tools are essential to our daily lives. A DDoS attack is a disruption that can have huge consequences.

Microsoft was able to block the attack and keep servers running smoothly with their Azure DDoS Protection. This news is timely, considering that October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a collaborative effort between government and the tech industry to help raise awareness of the importance of staying safe online. Cybercrime affects not only businesses, but individuals as well. Learning secure ways to navigate the Internet is essential, and recognizing cybercrime helps everyone.
